This week the Johnny Depp led Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales film hits cinemas and has already received some fairly lukewarm early reviews; however it could have been different.

Originally the villain Armando Salazar, who is played by Academy Award winner Javier Bardem, could have been a female character. But the series main star Johnny Depp rejected the idea.

The film’s co-writer Terry Rossio said in a blog post he originally planned for a female villain to cause trouble for Captain Jack Sparrow, but Depp was worried it would feel too similar to another film he led back in 2012.

Rossio said “My version of Dead Men Tell No Tales was set aside because it featured a female villain, and Johnny Depp was worried that would be redundant to Dark Shadows, which also featured a female villain.”

The villain in discussion was played by Eva Green in Tim Burton’s supernatural horror-comedy Dark Shadows which also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter and Chloë Grace Moretz.
